Introduction:
This is not a popular destination because its location is unknown to many people; however, it is known as the “Jamaica of Europe” due to its green coastline and dark beaches.
The beauty of this island extends to some breathtaking “Miradoures” or viewpoints, which can be reached via a trail or even by car.
This is a nature lover’s paradise, with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in pleasant weather at any time of year.
Where is madeira?
This volcanic archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean some 800 km from the African coast, lined with Casa Blanca – Marroc, it was colonised at the beginning of XV century by Portugal.
Reasons
If the introduction to this article failed to capture your interest, I’m sure the following paragraphs will:
Food: Everything I tried was delicious; Madeira’s gastronomy is diverse, and I did my best to sample the most important dishes and beverages. Food is a cross between Portuguese and tropical flavours. There is also a strong influence from Spain and Latin America, particularly Venezuela, due to the island’s large Venezuelan population.
The landscape: is breathtaking, with dense verdant forests, volcanic mountains, and vibrant flower gardens. Madeira is well-known for its spectacular views, which can be found almost anywhere.
Weather: Madeira has the world’s perfect climate, with an eternal spring. Warm ocean currents influence climate and result in a lack of extreme hot or cold temperatures, resulting in a pleasant, mild climate all year.
Since the winter season does not have cold temperatures, it is possible to have a nice break from the north European cold seasons.
Affordable prices (low season): outside the tourist places it is easy to find food, souvenirs and hotels with a reasonable price. A good meal for two could cost between 30 and 50 euros.
Fuel and car rental are also quite convenient; the petrol price was 1.69€ litres and the car was around 200 with basic insurance and a second driver.
A double bed room costs around 60 euros per night on average. This place is also ideal for camping; free campsites are available throughout the island; all you need to do is obtain a permit.
Best things to do:
-
- Hiking is the best way to appreciate Madeira’s beauty; trails are well-marked and labelled with PR plus a number.
The most well-known walk is PR1, which connects Pico do Arieiro and Pico do Ruivo. There is another PR1.2 vereda do Pico Ruivo that is similar.
The central mountain range has some of the most beautiful scenery on the island.
-
- Visit small villages; some are simply not to be missed. However, when touring the island, you cannot stop at every location. Here are some of the most beautiful villages on the island that are worth a visit: Santana, Camera de Lobos, and Curral das Freiras.
-
- Swimming and snorkelling are best enjoyed on a sunny day due to the dark lava beaches.
My favourite location was a hidden gem between the mountains, and you must be prepared for this short but uphill trail. But you know that the more difficult it is, the more you appreciate the result.
-
- Live music, There is a large selection of restaurants and bars in Funchal have live music, particularly on weekends. I listened to fado music while sipping a lovely white sangria and poncha de maracuja.
- Relax on the beach, whether you prefer a natural swimming pool in Seixal or Porto Moniz, or a sandy beach in Praia da Calheta or Machico; there is always time for relaxation.
