The Best Travel Apps for South America

I am so grateful for technology and how much it has helped me during my time in South America. Specifically, having these ten essential apps at your fingertips will make your journey more enjoyable, organised, and stress-free. From language translation and navigation to finding accommodations and connecting with locals, these apps will help you make the most of your trip and create lasting memories.

CouchSurfing

Finding free or low-cost accommodations allows you to connect with locals and other travellers. However, it is also an excellent way to learn about a country; you can post about your trip and ask locals for advice.
Couchsurfing allows you to stay with friendly hosts who share their homes, resulting in an authentic cultural experience.

Uber

Uber is a reliable and convenient service that operates in a number of South American cities. If your card is linked to your Uber account, it can save you from having to withdraw cash every time.
People in major cities use this app, which is not always legally recognised as transportation.

InDriver

InDriver, an alternative to Uber, allows you to directly negotiate fares with drivers. It’s an excellent choice for cost-conscious travellers who want more control over pricing. It is widely used by the locals.

Your reliable navigation companion! Download offline maps of the regions you will be visiting. Google Maps can help you find attractions, restaurants, and public transportation options.

Google Maps

Your trusty navigation companion! Download offline maps for the regions you’ll be visiting. Google Maps helps you find attractions, restaurants, and public transport options.

HostelWorld

Find and book hostels, guesthouses, and low-cost accommodations. Read reviews, compare prices, and book your stay in advance.
It is probably the most well-known platform used by backpackers. Of course, there are other apps/websites where you can find good prices, but for reviews, this is one of the best options.

Google Translate

This must-have app will help you overcome language barriers. There aren’t many people who speak English in these areas, so if you need assistance, this can drastically alter your approach to locals. Translate phrases, menus, and signs instantly. It’s extremely useful for communicating with locals.

Duolingo

Do you want to learn some basic phrases in Spanish, Portuguese, or other South American languages? Duolingo provides fun language lessons on the go.

Redbus

If you’re taking a long-distance bus, Redbus can help you book tickets, check schedules, and find reputable bus operators throughout South America.
Be aware that some buses are not listed on this website; you may find more companies operating from the bus station and lower prices.

AllTrails

Exciting news for adventure seekers! AllTrails offers detailed hiking and trekking trail maps. Discover breathtaking landscapes while exploring nature safely.
You can get a free version to see how it works, but for a better trip, the full version allows you to download maps to avoid getting lost while offline.

XE Currency

Keep track of exchange rates. It’s useful for converting local currencies and keeping track of your travel budget.
Tips: Check the exchange rate before arriving at the hostel, as they may not have updated the rates.
Also, check with locals about the exchange rate; some countries may require more dollars and pay more for them!

Remember to download these apps before your trip and set your phone to Wi-Fi mode to avoid data roaming charges. Happy travels

  1. Thanks for sharing, I could not travel without Apps. There is one app i can also highly recommend – ATM Fee Saver – this app shows ATMs around you with no or low fees for withdrawing cash. I use it all the time and its so simple and makes you really save money. Check it out 🙂
