A female wild camping on Isle of Skye

I highly recommend giving it a try if you’re a woman who enjoys camping and outdoor activities but doesn’t have friends who feel the same way or perhaps the timing or finances don’t work out, possibly wild camping in this location might change your perception of a solo traveller.

Wild camping as a solo female traveller had always been on my bucket list, and doing so for the first time in the isle of Skye was a great experience due the ideal location.

I spent a few nights sleeping in my car during this trip to gain familiarity with the island, and on my final night, I discovered the ideal location for wild camping and grilling in front of a breathtaking view.

Getting there

The best way to make the most of your trip is to rent a car. Although local transportation is an option, it is infrequent. Another option is to hitchhike; Scotland is a safe place to use this method, and if you find the right people who pick you up, I think it can be a pleasant experience.

Budget tips

The Isle of Skye is a popular tourist destination in the United Kingdom. It is difficult to keep your budget low or even find accommodation because hotels are either often fully booked or remaining rooms are very expensive.

Travelling on a budget in Scotland means freedom, because this country is ameniable to, and ideal for, wild camping, which is both the cheapest and most flexible way to travel.

Sleeping in the car or in a campsite

If you decide to rent a car and sleep inside,  you can easily find a nice spot in the middle of nowhere or you can find a parking area to do so; just be sure tio find a spot near a public toilet and be confident that no one will approach you.

There are numerous campsites distributed around the island, so you could consider sleeping there and getting around by bus.

Wild Camping nearby the car

There are countless of spots along the island where you can park and walk a few metres to set up your tent and enjoy a nice view. The chief advantage of this method is that you can bring less stuff with you.

The easiest way to find them is to pay attention while you are driving; however, be cautious because there are many campers, making it difficult to find parking at times.

Some of them are near the main attractions, where there is plenty of parking and public restrooms.

Do not camping

where it says no overnight camping or in passing places, it is better to walk or drive further and find a spot where you won’t disturb anyone, the countryside is vast here so you will find many places throughout the island.

Best period to visit

Outside of summer, the weather in Scotland can be challenging, so I strongly recommend camping in May, June, and July. Although August is a warm month, , there is usually ore precipitation beyond July.

The end of May or the first weeks of June are ideal for me, not only because of the weather but also to avoid the peak season for midges. They are a nightmare, believe me.

Also during summer it is easy to go wild swimming or bring your own shower and have a nice refresh.

Tips to keep in mind

    • Cooking, if you intend to cook, keep in mind that the wind may be an issue, so be prepared.

    • Even in the summer, nights can be quite cold, especially if you sleep alone. Bring a thick sleeping bag or thicker clothes.

    • Due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, all of your camping gear must be waterproof.

My experience

My concerns vanished when I went wild camping by myself. Around 8 p.m. I spotted a nice place near a quiet street, due the wind condition I made sure that the tent was properly secured, and set up a BBQ.

I take immense pleasure in spending the evening listening to music and eating a wonderful dinner. The view was breathtaking, and it was sunny. I texted my brother, telling him where I was sleeping, then got my earplugs and slept like a baby.

Being organised and respectful is essential for having a nice time, and if you’ve never camped before, I recommend starting with a campsite. You will determine how many items you require.

Doing activities by yourself boosts your confidence and self love; you will feel empowered by how much you can do in your own company.
